Roadside markets for road trip snacks

Looking for ways to avoid stopping at convenience stores for packaged, processed snacks while on a road trip? We made a great discovery over the weekend near Moncton. Instead of stopping at the…Continue

Local cheese has come to town!

Over the weekend I discovered a way to use "Costco" and "local food" in the same sentence...The new Costco in Saint John carries a selection of New Brunswick-made artisanal cheeses. My favourite find…Continue

Local molasses adds robust warmth to this hearty dish

On chilly days I like to eat food that makes me feel warm, but I'm not always in the mood for soup. That's when I turn to hearty grains like farro, brown rice and barley. I created this recipe to use up some leftover kale and realised that molasses is the perfect sweetener to stand up to kale and grains. I chop my kale fairly…See More

New Brunswick-made sauerkraut delicious alongside roast chicken and braised vegetables

My husband loves sauerkraut and just the thought of it brings back happy childhood memories in Germany. But the only memory I could conjure about sauerkraut was the smell of boiled hotdogs and sausages sold by street vendors in Freeport, Maine. I'm not much for hotdogs and sausages so the sauerkraut was guilty by association. An…See More

Try a little local beer in your black bean chili

Just the thought of chili can warm me on a cold winter’s day. It’s a hearty meal and in many cookbooks is listed as a vegetarian main dish rather than alongside the soups. I have been making black bean chili for years but just last month came across a recipe that included a bottle of beer so I have modified my original recipe. A…See More

Make local onions a suppertime star

I think onions are often underappreciated. You might cook with them every day but they’re never the star of the meal. Onions add body, texture and flavour but are often invisible in a dish. That is, unless you caramelize your onions. Then they can become a versatile suppertime star in pizza and pasta dishes (see recipes…See More

Preserved lemons add sunny warmth to winter dishes

Preserved lemonsThis recipe is from Paula Wolfert, a well-known authority on Mediterranean cooking who seems to have a special fondness for the cuisine of North Africa. I keep preserved lemons on hand to add oomph to couscous but have recently rediscovered a tasty recipe for preserved lemons with homemade pasta, garlic and…See More

Homemade turkey stock is the highlight of Holiday leftovers

In our household winter is soup season, a time of year that a couple of evening meals each week are hearty broths filled with root vegetables, lentils, beans and heavy grains like barley and farro. When it’s cold out soup makes a satisfying supper and an even better lunch the next day.My secret to a flavourful soup with depth is…See More

Newest cookbook by local author makes a great gift

Calling it a cookbook sells Dinner Chez Moi short since it’s as much a book about spending time with family and friends, albeit around the table. Full of delightful stories, thoughtful musings and recipes that you can really use, the book reminds you that breaking bread with those who are dear to you is what eating well is…See More

Local squash is very accommodating

I love recipes that are accommodating, delicious dishes that work well as a light lunch alongside a salad, as a first course at a dinner party or as an appetizer with a glass of wine or beer. I also love recipes that offer new ways to make use of the 50 lbs of local buttercup squash that I bought in October. This tart is a keeper.…See More

Everyday favourites make great gifts

Homemade granola is a staple in our house. It hits the spot sprinkled on top of cereal in the morning and is my favourite afternoon snack (mixed with yogurt and sprinkled with maple sugar).Chances are some of your homemade favourites would make welcomed gifts for your friends and family. They're the sort of practical gifts that…See More

i love your beet recipe. I cannot get enough of these lately. I even went to Benjamin Moore to see if they had a paint chip to match a dish of beets and yogourt. They did!
Regarding Slow Food. it takes 3 members to start a convivium and 20 members to be a legal Canadian convivium. There are a couple of chefs in the Saint Andrews area that may hook up with the boys at Speerville Mills and maybe Picaroons Beer.
I hope to get one going for South East NB by the Fall. We have an ECO Festival on the weekend of Sept 19 and that is when I will have a kiosk for Slow Food. There is lots of interest in this area. Membership is 90.00 per person.
What I am doing at this time is talking to everyone I meet about the movement and taking their email so that when I am ready to launch, everyone will hear about it at the same time. So spread the word. I bet by this time next year we will have 3 or 4 conviviums and for Terra Madre 2012 we will be well represented. (I will be going)
Cheers
Diane

Hello Bridget
I am Adrienne Savoie's sister living in Bouctouche NB. She told me about your website which led me to this. I know Eric very well and just love him. I also know your mom but have not seen her in years. Your website is great thank youHJN!
I am a chocolatiere (semi retired) and a culinary professional. These days I work as a culinary coach, activist, teacher and food writer. I also work for HEPAC as a wellness coordinator and one of my regions is Saint John. I hope that on my next trip that we can meet. I am also trying to start the Slow Food movement here in NB. I attended the National Leaders Convention in NS in May and hope to have a first convivium started by the fall. I think this site will really help me with that.
